چکیده
The aim of the present study was to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility of a collection of 65 Prevotella strains originating from Romanian patients with abscesses of fascial spaces of the face and neck. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of benzylpenicillin, cefoxitin, clindamycin and metronidazole were determined with the Etest. In addition, the beta-lactamase production was assessed by using a chromogenic cephalosporin disc method. The isolates were sensitive to all antibiotics, except for 13 strains which were resistant to benzylpenicillin, due to their beta-lactamase activity. The results of this local investigation on the susceptibility patterns of Prevotella clinical isolates suggest that the combination penicillin beta-lactamase inhibitor, clindamycin and metronidazole should be recommended in infections produced by these bacteria. The findings of the present study also underline the importance of covering both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, including betalactamase producers, with the antimicrobial treatment, when it is needed and prescribed empirically in the oral and maxillofacial infections, which are known to be mostly mixed infections.

The esthetic surgical management of a submandibular fascial space infection of odontogenic origin
Background Odontogenic infections are common complications in dental practice and can sometimes spread through the cervical fascia and cause abscesses of the deep fascial spaces. Some of these abscesses can be life threatening. Early diagnosis of these deep fascial abscesses and aggressive antimicrobial and surgical treatment with extensive drainage are of utmost importance. The aim of this pre...
متن کاملAntimicrobial susceptibilities of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Prevotella nigrescens spp. isolated in Spain.
The susceptibilities of 143 Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Prevotella nigrescens isolates to 18 antimicrobial agents were tested. All P. gingivalis isolates were susceptible. In contrast, some Prevotella spp. (17%) were resistant to beta-lactams, erythromycin, clindamycin, or tetracycline and carried resistance genes, ermF or tetQ, or beta-lactamases.

OBJECTIVES To compare the antimicrobial susceptibility of Prevotella spp. isolated from cystic fibrosis (CF) and non-CF patients and analyse the impact of antibiotic prescribing in the preceding year on resistance amongst CF isolates. METHODS The susceptibility of 80 CF Prevotella isolates to 12 antibiotics was compared with that of 50 Prevotella isolates from invasive infections in people wh...
متن کاملCOLLAGENASE ACTIVITY IN PREVOTELLA BIVIUS ISOLATED FROM PATIENTS WITH PREMATURE RUPTURE OF MEMBRANES
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) has been considered to be the most prevalent infection found in sexually active women. BV is thought to play an important role in the premature rupture of membranes (PROM) and preterm birth. Preterm delivery accounts for a substantial percentage of low birth weight infants and perinatal mortality and morbidity. Bacteroides and Prevotella species have been isolated f...
متن کاملSusceptibilities of Eikenella corrodens, Prevotella intermedia, and Prevotella nigrescens clinical isolates to amoxicillin and tetracycline.
The AB Biodisk Etest showed that 106 (100%) and 98 (92%) isolates of Eikenella corrodens were susceptible to amoxicillin and tetracycline, respectively. Twenty-three (68%) Prevotella intermedia isolates and 14 (67%) Prevotella nigrescens isolates were susceptible to amoxicillin. Seventy-nine percent of the P. intermedia isolates and 67% of the P. nigrescens isolates were susceptible to tetracyc...
